2016 Summer Multicultural Leadership in STEM

Volunteer Program

Veritas Education, founded by Dr. Sharon Yu-Hsien Wu, is the newest addition to the U.S.-China Education and Culture Center (USCECC) family. USCECC has been serving domestic and international students since 2010 by providing high quality competency-based learning programs.

USCECC is providing a Leadership in STEM Summer Volunteer Opportunity, which aims to enhance K-3 students’ interest in STEM. The Leadership in STEM program will take place at a Hebrew Immersion Public Charter School in DC, where its students learn in both English and Hebrew.

Project Description:

USCECC is seeking STEM-focused middle and high school students to participate in the program. Qualified STEM leaders, along with the school teaching team, will work together to develop hands-on activities and educational projects to increase K-3 students' interest in STEM.

Preferred qualities:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Be able to work in a multicultural environment

  • Strong academic proficiency in Math, Science, Engineering, or Technology

  • Students with tutoring or relevant experience preferred

  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills

  • Time commitment:

    • Project length: 7/5/2016 – 8/5/2016

    • Commitment: minimum 1 week (5 work days) and 1 shift per work day (4-5 hours per shift; morning and afternoon shifts are available)

Service Learning Benefits:

  • Students will receiving training in communication, classroom management, teamwork, and leadership skills

  • Students will apply STEM related knowledge in real life education

  • Students will work in a multicultural environment (in a Hebrew Immersion Public Charter School)

  • Students will learn executive function skills such as organizational skills, goal setting, and time management

  • Students will practice independent thinking and problem solving skills

  • Students will earn up to 100 service learning hours to obtain the service learning cord or fulfill the requirements for the Civics Seal
