Java classes are to be taught by Dr. Eugene Hsiang and the computing competition algorithms by Samuel Hsiang, a USA Computing Olympiad finalist (2014) and co-Captain of TJ Senior Computer Team. In this hands-on course, students gain extensive experience with Java and its object-oriented features. Students learn to design and implement control flows, sorting algorithms, recursion, input/output, arrays, data structures, as well as GUI interfaces and animation. The course is lab-based with an emphasis on gaining a working knowledge of Java APIs and developing problem-solving skills. In the later part of the course, the techniques frequently used in computing competitions will be introduced. Course Prerequisites: No prior knowledge in Java is required. Homework: Hands on programming assignments will be assigned each class. Students are required to complete the exercises to master the materials and to keep up with the curriculum. Time: Saturdays, 9am-11am, from Jan. 9, 2016 to June 18, 2016. Registration is on a first come, first served basis and space is limited! Enrollment opens now until filled. A 2nd prize winner in Zhejiang Province during high school, Dr. Hsiang was the grand prize winner in a higher mathematics competition at Zhejiang University in 1984. Both of Dr. Hsiang’s children have had high achievement in math and computer competitions. Our TJ admission test preparation program is known for being a highly successful program in the Northern Virginia area. Students in this program learn the tools that enable them to be successful when they take the TJ Entrance Exam, SIS and Essay writing in December 2015. In the Fall of 2010 class, 10 out of 12 students were accepted for the 2015 class. In the Fall 2011 class, 21 out of 27 students were accepted for the 2016 class. In the Fall 2012, 13 out of 20 students were accepted, plus two students were accepted in Summer round in 2013. In Fall 2013 class, 22 out of 30 students were accepted by TJ. In 2014 classes, 23 out of 37 students were accepted by TJ. We designed a one year program for the TJ prep. from Spring to Fall semester. In the spring semester, we focus more on basics. In fall, we will have more practices and test skill practices. We recommend students to take the TJ prep. program from spring to fall. The statistics indicate to us that students who took both the spring and fall semester had a much higher TJ acceptance rate.
Overview: Language/Writing Class The goal of the Language/Writing course is to prepare students for the Verbal section of the TJ Admissions test and to prepare students for both the Student Information Sheet (SIS) and the Timed Essay. Over the course of the spring, students will spend considerable time reading and writing, both in and out of class. The course will cover grammar and writing conventions, and students will be required to practice writing one essay during each class session and another essay between sessions at home. The instructor will provide students with individualized feedback designed to help each student improve in his/her writing skills. Students will also spend considerable time reading non-fiction passages to prepare for the verbal section. The course will cover: · Scrambled Paragraphs · Logical Reasoning · Reading Comprehension · SIS: Students Information Sheet · TJHSST Essays: Persuasive, Reflective, and Expository Overview: Math Class The math course will prepare students to take the math portion of the TJHSST admissions exam in December 2014. The course will cover all of the following topics: Arithmetic and Number Operations, Number Theory and Number Sense, Statistics, Probability and Data Analysis, Simplifying and Evaluating Variable Expressions, Solving Equations and Solving Algebraic and Geometric Word Problems. The course will also cover test taking strategies and multiple choice strategies. Intensive practice will be introduced.

Writing Teacher: Ms. M She graduated with a degree in Sociology, English, and Elementary Education. She earned an MA in English from Washington College in MD, and has taught English 7th through 8th grade for 22 years, in both the public and private sector. At this time, Ms. M teaches 8th grade Advanced Academic English at Longfellow middle School.
Mr. Ascarrunz, Math Teacher Mr. Ascarrunz is a former graduate of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. He attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He has also attended George Mason University where he received his Masters degree in Secondary Education. He has 8 years of high school teaching experience in the Fairfax County Public School system, and 8 years of private tutoring experience. He has taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Honors Geometry, and AP Calculus AB and has worked with students in Grades 9 through 12. He is certified to teach both AP Calculus AB and BC. Every student doesn’t want to miss his class. The students love his teaching style very much.
